The Operation of Faith: Christ's Death

Updated: Jun 25, 2019

Ensure you read Friday's Sunrise

Last week we dealt with the divine atonement. I want you to bear in mind that every thing that we have discussed so far has much to do with faith. It is a necessary foundation, that ought not be ignored.

We are going to continue to learn about the death of Christ. Friday, we saw that when we received the Holy Spirit we received the atonement. The Holy Spirit is an eternal Spirit, thus is not limited to time. When you receive the Holy Spirit, it reveals that you had been in Christ on the cross as He suffered for our sins. At His death, the Holy Spirit went back to heaven and his soul went to hell, and his body went to the tomb.

Thus, we see Jesus suffering in hell 3 days and nights for our sins.

Acts 2:25-27

25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Jesus was in hell suffering for our sins, however how did He get out? Listen to the words of Jesus in the book of John.

John 5:25&28

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

...

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

Jesus preached here that the those that are dead and in the grave would soon hear Him preach to them. Peter bore witness of this saying...

1 Peter 3:18-20

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

This scripture causes us to see that Jesus did indeed preach to the dead. Those that were held by death, had to have the opportunity to be saved. They had to know that their sins had been paid for on the cross. They had to hear the gospel preached. Thus, Jesus went and preached to them. However, according the scripture above, He had to preach by the Spirit.

Thus, we know how Jesus came out of hell. Remember we read that His soul was in hell, but His prayer to God was that He not leave His soul in hell. In other words, He knew that God would come back for Him. His soul was going to be placed back in God. His soul was going to be raised to life by the Spirit of God in the depths of hell. If this did not happen Jesus could not preach to the spirits in prison (death/grave). Jesus received the Holy Spirit in the depths of hell, thus it is written in the scriptures...

Acts 13:33

God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

Jesus was born again in hell, because received the Holy Spirit a second time there. The first in Mary, and the second in hell.

What does all this have to do with us?

Hebrews 11:39-40

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

All the Old Patriarchs that were in the grave could not be made perfect without the church. They were made perfect when Jesus ran His revival in hell. When He preached many received the Holy Spirit, and those that believed came up out of hell, death and the grave as a cloud of witnesses. But the scripture says none of this could have happened without the church. Where then was the church?

The Church was in the eternal Spirit, the Holy Ghost. When Jesus' soul was being joined to the Holy Spirit in hell, we were in the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 139:15-16

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

This is a prayer out of the mouth of Jesus. The substance of Jesus, is His body the Church. God's eyes saw, the Church, when He was being made in the lower parts of the earth (hell). In other words, the Church was made, in hell while Jesus was being born again. However, while this was happening it had not yet been made known in time who exactly the church was. There was no one with the Holy Spirit yet. However, in continuance (as time goes on) it would be revealed who the substance of Christ is.

The Church was formed in the belly of the earth. Thus, when Jesus preached to the spirits in prison we were there, in the Spirit.

Thus we can finally understand this scripture.

Romans 6:3

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized INTO HIS DEATH?

His death was while He was in hell. He was in death (the holding place for the soul). Through the Holy Spirit, we were brought to the lower parts of the earth and joined to Christ. We were baptized into His death. However, soon we will see how we were raised with Him, in newness of life. This is the operation of faith.
