A Time in the Wilderness

From the children of Israel until now with the church, God’s purpose in the lives of His people has never changed. He always wanted ambassadors, people who would represent His character here on earth. This desire was so great in His heart that He deliberately led an entire nation of people (Israel) into a wilderness for 40 years just so that He could humble them. As they journeyed from their land of captivity in Egypt to a promised land flowing with milk and honey, He routed them through a barren land where they were forced to face the natural elements on their own. There was no certainty of food, shelter, nor favorable weather conditions. They were among wild insects, animals and beasts day and night. Nothing that they had come to depend on in Egypt was guaranteed to them in the wilderness, and as a result, they had no choice but to depend on God.

As the sons of God today, we are very much like Israel. We’ve been rescued from the bondage of slavery in sin, and we are everyday getting closer to our true eternal home. We’ve been promised to inherit the earth if we remain meek and lowly. But right now, we are facing a wilderness of our own. The situations, circumstances and relationships in our lives are oftentimes very hostile towards our faith. Everyday our mettle is tested as we are indwelled by Christ in an anti-Christian world. This makes us a natural target for the forces of darkness. But Israel never lost a battle as long as they obeyed God, and neither will we! The same God who did wonders in the wilderness, lives in us today. We can rest assured that nothing He wants us to have will be withheld from us; and anything that He withholds, is because He has determined that we don’t need it. Israel walked for 40 years without needing a new pair of shoes because of God’s provision - so what have we to worry about?

Philippians 4:6-7

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
