Mustard Seed Faith

Let's pause for a moment and examine one of the most popular faith scriptures.

Luke 17:4-5

4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

The disciples heard something they thought was impossible to do; which was to forgive someone (treat and see them as if they have never done wrong) 7 times in a day. In other scripture, He multiplied that 7 by 70, all still being in 1 day. The disciples having heard this, discerned their own hearts and thought that this was impossible for their character to accomplish. They knew it took faith in God. Hence their request, "Lord, increase our faith."

However, take note of Jesus' response.

Luke 17:6

6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

The Lord's response is so important, because He is teaching a mystery. He says all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed. See the image below for the size of a mustard seed.

A mustard seed, is an extremely small seed. Jesus says if you have faith the size of that seed above, you can speak to a tree and tell it to be uprooted and it should obey you.

Let's examine this for a moment. Why would Jesus compare faith to a mustard seed? He is trying to get us to see that if we had even the smallest measure of faith we could do great wonders and do the impossible. In other words, He was showing the disciples that their faith could not be increased, instead they needed to receive faith.

Romans 12:3

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Faith is something that God dealt to us. In this case faith is more than belief. The scripture below explains the scripture above.

Ephesians 4:7

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

The measure of faith is the measure of Christ. Faith is the Holy Ghost. Thus, Jesus was letting His disciples know that if they had faith (the Holy Ghost) with any measure of it, they will be able to do the impossible. They would be able to always forgive and walk in righteousness in any situation. They can speak to a literal tree and tell it to be thrown in the sea, or to a figurative sycamine tree with its black fruit of iniquity and unforgiveness, and remove it from the soil of the heart. Either way, Faith can keep you righteous and do what's impossible for the natural man.

So inspect your life and your heart, and ask yourself, "Do I have faith?"
