When you begin to pray if there is any sin in your life, God will communicate that. He will not hear your prayer if there is sin in your heart. You must first completely turn from that sin, and turn to God in order for Him to hear you. Ask Him to wash you and fill you up with His holiness. If there is sin in your life, as soon as you begin to pray, He will bring something to mind. Pay attention to it. Listen to what He says about it, and what you should do to fix it. Then obey.
Be humble. Search your heart for traces of pride, entitlement or presumption, and eliminate them. Examine the disposition from which you are praying. Do you really believe that you cannot handle one second of the day without God? If you procrastinate prayer that is a sign that you do not believe this. Are you praying in earnest for His mercy? These things reveal how you truly feel. So even if you pray for mercy, God will read your heart and you will not be given mercy.
Whatever hidden thing of dishonesty God is revealing to your heart, renounce it, and you will experience Him leading you even further in your time of prayer.
