In Matthew 2, a specific verse offers crucial context for understanding the Jews' relationship with Jesus in the Gospels. After the wise men informed Herod about the birth of the King of the Jews, it appears that this news spread to the people of Israel.

Matthew 2:3 reads, "When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him."

Why, though, would all of Jerusalem be troubled upon hearing about the birth of their King? Their reaction wasn't the same as Herod's, but rather, they contemplated the truth of these reports in their hearts. Herod was troubled by the possibility of being overthrown, while Israel was stirred by the news of their promised Messiah.

As we explore the Gospels, it's crucial to remember that the Children of Israel lived by the teachings of Moses and the prophecies of the Old Testament. They wholeheartedly believed in these prophecies and eagerly awaited their fulfillment. They were well-versed in the scriptures concerning their Messiah, recognizing Him as their deliverer.

Throughout the Gospels, you'll notice that the Jews frequently referenced Old Testament figures in their interactions with Jesus. Their upbringing instilled deep respect for the scriptures, so Jesus had to align with the writings of the Old Testament. They wouldn't easily accept anything that didn't harmonize with the scriptures. While some, like the self-serving Pharisees, twisted scripture interpretations for their own desires, the pure practice of faith in the scriptures remains a foundational principle that not just Jews but all Christians should uphold.
